Genghis Khan’s camp on the Orkhon appeared around 1220, but Karakorum became a city under Ögedei: in 1235 it was enclosed by an earthen wall, and the khan’s palace rose nearby. In the same year a kurultai resolved to launch a great campaign to the west with the forces of the whole empire. Karakorum remained the capital until 1260; Rus’ princes and European envoys, among them William of Rubruck, visited it.
