Siege of Kozelsk
Kozelsk, a small appanage town in the Chernihiv land ruled by the twelve-year-old Prince Vasily, held off Batu’s army for seven weeks; the Mongols called it the “evil city”.

Kozelsk was taken only after the corps of Kadan and Büri arrived, and all its inhabitants were slaughtered. The siege was the last episode of the 1237–1238 campaign against northeastern Rus’, after which the Mongols withdrew to the steppe.
