Death of Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan died during his last campaign against the Tangut state of Western Xia, which the Mongols destroyed soon afterwards; in accordance with the khan’s will, his third son Ögedei became his successor.

The circumstances of his death are unclear: sources mention a sudden illness, the aftermath of a fall from his horse and other causes. He died in late summer 1227 in Tangut territory, before the walls of their capital Zhongxing (modern Yinchuan). Modern scholars give two dates, 18 and 25 August, so the date is given as a range.
Genghis Khan’s burial place has never been found. Ögedei was confirmed as great khan at the kurultai of 1229.
