Siege of Vladimir
After a short siege the armies of Batu and Subutai stormed Vladimir, the capital of northeastern Rus’; the grand prince’s family perished in the Dormition Cathedral.

Grand Prince Yuri II had gone north in advance to gather an army, leaving the defense to his sons. The Mongols appeared before the city on 3 February 1238, surrounded it with a palisade, set up stone-throwing engines and broke in at the Golden Gate. Historians give different days for the final assault, 7 or 8 February, so the end of the siege is given as a range. After the fall of the capital, fourteen more towns of the principality were sacked in the course of February alone.
