Battle of the Sit River
A Mongol corps under Burundai took by surprise the army that Grand Prince Yuri II had gathered on the Sit River; the Russian forces were surrounded and routed, and the grand prince was killed.

Yuri was waiting on the Sit for his brothers’ troops and had not yet made ready for battle when the Mongols arrived. The death of the grand prince and his army left northeastern Rus’ without the strength to resist.
The traditional date of the battle, 4 March 1238, is the day on which the captive Prince Vasilko of Rostov was killed in the Shern Forest. Taking into account the distance from the battlefield to that forest, historians place the battle itself in the last days of February or the first days of March, so the date is given as a range. The battle took place in the basin of the Mologa; its exact site has not been established.
