Kościuszko Uprising

An uprising against Russian and Prussian domination, proclaimed by Tadeusz Kościuszko in the market square of Kraków. It was crushed by Russian and Prussian troops; the decisive blow was Suvorov’s storming of Praga, a suburb of Warsaw.

After the insurgents’ victory at Racławice on 4 April, the uprising spread to Warsaw and Vilnius. On 10 October the main Polish forces were defeated at Maciejowice and the wounded Kościuszko was taken prisoner; on 4 November Suvorov’s troops stormed Praga, and the assault was accompanied by a massacre. The last detachments capitulated at Radoszyce on 16 November. Dates are New Style.
