Suvorov’s Italian campaign

In four months the Russo-Austrian army of Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov drove the French out of almost all of northern Italy, winning victories on the Adda, on the Trebbia and at Novi.

The campaign was part of the War of the Second Coalition. Suvorov arrived in Verona on 3 (14) April 1799, entered Milan on 18 (29) April and took Turin in May; in June he defeated Macdonald’s army in a three-day battle on the Trebbia, and in August Joubert’s army at Novi. Paul I granted the commander the title of Prince Italiysky (“of Italy”).
