High in the Andes above the Urubamba valley rose Machu Picchu, a mountain residence of the Inca nobility — in the view of most archaeologists, an estate of Pachacuti.

No written records of its construction survive. It used to be dated to around 1450 on the basis of the chronology of Pachacuti’s reign, but radiocarbon dating (a 2021 study) has shown that the settlement already existed by about 1420. The date is therefore given as a range.
