Work on the edition apparently began soon after 1450, and the first copies were ready in 1454 or 1455: in March 1455 the future Pope Pius II wrote that he had seen leaves of the new Bible in Frankfurt. Of the 158 or 180 copies printed, 49 have survived. Gutenberg’s debts to his partner Johann Fust led to the printing shop passing to Fust and Peter Schöffer.
