Battle of Castillon
A French army entrenched in a fortified artillery camp routed the English; their commander, John Talbot, was killed. It was the last battle of the Hundred Years’ War.

Believing that the French were retreating, Talbot attacked the camp prepared by the master of artillery Jean Bureau without waiting for reinforcements and ran into cannon fire. On 19 October 1453 the French retook Bordeaux, and England lost Gascony. Castillon was one of the first battles in Europe to be decided by artillery. The date is given in the Julian calendar.
