Battle of the Pyramids
Bonaparte’s army routed the forces of the Egyptian Mamluks under Murad Bey and Ibrahim Bey at Embabeh, on the left bank of the Nile, which opened the road to Cairo for the French.

The French formed squares, against which the charges of the Mamluk cavalry broke. Before the battle, according to tradition, Bonaparte addressed his soldiers with the famous words about forty centuries looking down on them from the heights of the pyramids. The wounded Murad Bey withdrew to Upper Egypt with the remnants of his forces.
