Fall of Seringapatam and death of Tipu Sultan
The army of the British East India Company and its ally, the Nizam of Hyderabad, besieged the capital of Mysore and stormed it on 4 May 1799; the ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, was killed fighting at the walls of the fortress.

The siege ended the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. Governor-General Richard Wellesley had begun the war fearing an alliance between Tipu and the French: Bonaparte, who had landed in Egypt, wrote to the sultan of his readiness to free him from the “iron yoke of England”, and a small party of French volunteers had come to Mysore from Mauritius.
The army was commanded by General George Harris, the assault columns were led by David Baird, and the reserve was under Colonel Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington. After the fall of the city the British restored the throne of Mysore to the Wadiyar dynasty, placing the principality under their control, and the East India Company became the dominant power in southern India.
