Battle of the Nile
Horatio Nelson’s British squadron attacked the French fleet at anchor in Aboukir Bay and destroyed it almost entirely; the flagship Orient blew up.

Nelson had searched the Mediterranean for the French expedition for more than two months before he found Admiral Brueys’s fleet off the mouth of the Nile. Attacking from the seaward and the landward side at the same time, he caught the French ships in a crossfire; only Villeneuve’s rearguard managed to break out.
The victory gave Britain command of the Mediterranean, cut off Bonaparte’s army in Egypt and pushed the European powers towards the War of the Second Coalition.
