Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan
Fifth Umayyad caliph (685–705). He won the Second Fitna — his general al-Hajjaj killed the rival caliph Ibn al-Zubayr in Mecca in 692 — replaced Byzantine and Sasanian money with a single Islamic coinage and made Arabic the language of the administration; he built the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and sent Hassan ibn al-Nu'man to complete the conquest of North Africa.
