Hassan ibn al-Nu'man
Umayyad general of the Ghassanid tribe, sent by Caliph Abd al-Malik with a large army to complete the conquest of Ifriqiya in the 690s. He took Carthage, lost it to a Byzantine fleet in 697 and retook and destroyed it in 698, was defeated by the Berber queen al-Kahina and later defeated and killed her; he founded Tunis and organised the administration of the province from Kairouan until his dismissal in 704.
