Uqba ibn Nafi
Arab commander of the Qurayshite clan of Fihr, a kinsman of Amr ibn al-As, who campaigned for a quarter of a century in Cyrenaica and the Fezzan. As governor of Ifriqiya he founded Kairouan in 670, and in the early 680s he led a raid deep into the western Maghreb, by tradition as far as the Atlantic; on his return he was ambushed and killed by the Berber leader Kusaila near Biskra. His tomb stands at Sidi Okba.
