Ahmad ibn Hanbal
Hadith scholar and jurist of Baghdad, compiler of the Musnad, one of the largest collections of hadith, and eponym of the Hanbali school of law. During the mihna he refused to declare the Qur’an created and was imprisoned and flogged under al-Mu'tasim; his steadfastness made him the hero of the traditionalists against the Mu'tazila.
