Person822–861
Al-Mutawakkil
Tenth Abbasid caliph (847–861), son of al-Mu'tasim. He abandoned the mihna and the Mu'tazili doctrine, built at Samarra the Great Mosque with its spiral minaret (848–851) and a new palace city, al-Mutawakkiliyya, and was murdered by his Turkish guards — the beginning of the decade of turmoil known as the ‘Anarchy at Samarra’.
