al-Biruni
Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, Khwarazmian polymath — astronomer, mathematician, chronologist and geographer. Born in Kath in Khwarazm, he moved between the courts of Bukhara, Tabaristan and Gurganj, from 1017 lived at Ghazni under Mahmud and spent several years in his Indian lands; his "India" (c. 1030), a description of Indian science, religion and customs, is the work on which his fame as an Indologist chiefly rests.
