Mahmud of Ghazni
Ghaznavid ruler (998–1030), son of Sabuktigin, often called the first ruler to bear the title sultan (in his time it was still used informally). His empire stretched from north-western Iran to the Punjab and Khwarazm; he raided India again and again, sacking the temple of Somnath (1025–1026), and al-Biruni served at his court.
