Person780–850
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
Mathematician, astronomer and geographer who worked in Baghdad under al-Ma'mun and is associated with the House of Wisdom. His book on al-jabr gave algebra its name, and the Latin version of his treatise on calculation with Indian numerals, Algoritmi de numero Indorum, gave rise to the word ‘algorithm’; he also compiled astronomical tables, the Zij al-Sindhind, and a geography listing the coordinates of places (833). His name points to Khwarazm, south of the Aral Sea, though one passage of al-Tabari links him to Qutrubbul near Baghdad.
