Hunayn ibn Ishaq
Christian physician of the Church of the East from al-Hira, the most productive translator of the Abbasid age, known as ‘the sheikh of the translators’ and in Latin as Johannitius. Working in Baghdad with his son Ishaq and his pupils, he rendered into Syriac and Arabic much of Galen’s medical corpus as well as works of Hippocrates, Plato and Aristotle, and served as physician to the caliph al-Mutawakkil.
