Al-Kindi
Abu Yusuf Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, Arab philosopher and polymath from Kufa, of the noble tribe of Kinda, called ‘the Philosopher of the Arabs’. Patronised by al-Ma'mun and al-Mu'tasim, he oversaw translations of Greek philosophy and science and wrote on logic, mathematics, medicine, music and optics, creating much of the Arabic philosophical vocabulary; under al-Mutawakkil he fell from favour and his library was for a time confiscated.
