Balian of Ibelin
Lord of Ibelin, youngest son of Barisan of Ibelin, one of the leading barons of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and from 1177 the husband of Maria Komnene, widow of King Amalric. He escaped from Hattin, led the defence of Jerusalem in 1187 and negotiated its surrender to Saladin on 2 October, buying the freedom of thousands of poor inhabitants; in 1192 he helped to negotiate the Treaty of Jaffa that ended the Third Crusade.
