Saladin
Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, Sunni ruler of Kurdish origin, founder of the Ayyubid dynasty and first sultan of both Egypt and Syria. Sent to Fatimid Egypt with his uncle Shirkuh in 1164, he became vizier in 1169 and abolished the Fatimid caliphate in 1171; he defeated the crusaders at Hattin and took Jerusalem in 1187, and faced Richard I in the Third Crusade.
