Bolesław I the Brave

Piast duke of Poland from 992 and, by the usual dating, its first crowned king (1025), son of Mieszko I. He reunited Poland by 995, ransomed the body of Adalbert of Prague and hosted Otto III at the Congress of Gniezno (1000), which gave Poland its own archbishopric; in 1018 he took Kyiv for his son-in-law Sviatopolk.
