Person979–1019
Sviatopolk I
Prince of Kyiv in 1015–1016 and 1018–1019, the son of Vladimir the Great or, as the chronicle hints, of his brother Yaropolk, whose Greek widow Vladimir had taken. Married to a daughter of Bolesław I of Poland, he was in prison shortly before Vladimir’s death. The chronicle blames him for the murder of his brothers Boris, Gleb and Sviatoslav and calls him ‘the Accursed’; Bolesław restored him to Kyiv in 1018, but Yaroslav defeated him on the Alta in 1019, and he died in flight. About fifty of his silver coins are known.
