Boris and Gleb
Sons of Vladimir the Great — Boris, prince of Rostov, and Gleb, prince of Murom — killed in 1015 in the struggle for Kyiv: Boris on the Alta on the night of 24 July, Gleb near Smolensk on 5 September. Venerated as passion-bearers, they were the first saints of Rus’; their relics were kept at Vyshgorod near Kyiv, where in 1072 they were translated into a new church.
