Emperor Gaozu of Tang
Li Yuan, Duke of Tang, a first cousin of Emperor Yang of Sui through their mothers, sisters of the Dugu family. As the Sui governor of Taiyuan he rose in revolt in 617, took Chang’an and in 618 founded the Tang dynasty, reigning as its first emperor until 626, when after the Xuanwu Gate incident he yielded the throne to his son Li Shimin.
