Pope Gregory VII
Hildebrand of Sovana, a leader of the Roman reform party, pope from 1073. He fought simony and clerical marriage and asserted the supremacy of the pope over secular rulers, repeatedly excommunicating King Henry IV and declaring him deposed in 1076 and again in 1080; forced to leave Rome after the Norman sack of 1084, he died in exile at Salerno.
