Robert Guiscard
Norman adventurer of the Hauteville family who conquered southern Italy. Count of Apulia and Calabria from 1057, in 1059 he swore fealty to Pope Nicholas II as duke of Apulia and Calabria and "future lord of Sicily"; with his brother Roger he began the conquest of Muslim Sicily (1061) and in 1081 invaded the Byzantine Balkans, defeating Alexios I at Dyrrhachium.
