Pope Urban II
Odo of Châtillon, grand prior of Cluny and bishop of Ostia, pope from 12 March 1088. At the Council of Clermont (1095) he called for an expedition to aid the Eastern Christians and free the Holy Land, launching the First Crusade; he died on 29 July 1099, two weeks after Jerusalem fell, before the news could reach him.
