Person1050–1106
Henry IV
Salian king of Germany from 1054 (sole ruler after his father's death in 1056) and emperor from 1084. His clash with Gregory VII over the appointment of bishops began the Investiture Controversy: excommunicated, he did penance at Canossa in 1077, later set up the antipope Clement III and was crowned emperor by him in Rome, but in 1105 his son Henry V forced him to abdicate.
