Matilda of Tuscany
Margravine of Tuscany of the House of Canossa, who ruled much of northern and central Italy and was a mainstay of the reform papacy. Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV met at her castle of Canossa in 1077, and from 1080 she put her forces at the service of Gregory and his successors against Henry.
