Mas’ud I of Ghazni

Son of Mahmud of Ghazni and Ghaznavid sultan from 1030, when he defeated and imprisoned his brother Muhammad, the designated heir. Unable to stop the Seljuks in Khurasan, he was routed by them at Dandanaqan in 1040; on his way to India his troops mutinied and restored Muhammad, and Mas’ud was killed in the fortress of Giri in January 1041. Al-Biruni dedicated to him his encyclopaedia of astronomy, the Mas’udic Canon.
