Person
Rajendra I
Chola king (1014–1044), the son of Rajaraja I, associated with his father as heir and co-ruler from 1012. He completed the conquest of Sri Lanka, fought the Western Chalukyas, sent an army through eastern India to the Ganges — hence his title Gangaikonda Chola, ‘the Chola who took the Ganges’, which he also gave to his new capital, Gangaikondacholapuram — and about 1025 dispatched a fleet against Kadaram and Srivijaya. Under him the Chola empire reached its greatest extent.
