Western Chalukyas (Chalukyas of Kalyani)
Dynasty and empire of the western Deccan founded by Tailapa II, who in 973 overthrew the Rashtrakutas and claimed descent from the Chalukyas of Badami. Its kings ruled first from Manyakheta and, from about 1042, from Kalyani, fought long wars with the Cholas, above all for Vengi, and in the late 12th century lost their kingdom to the Kalachuris, the Seunas (Yadavas) and the Hoysalas.
