Vseslav of Polotsk
Prince of Polotsk from 1044 (with a break in 1067–1071) until his death in 1101, a great-grandson of Vladimir the Great, remembered as the Sorcerer. In 1067 he seized Novgorod, was defeated on the Nemiga and then treacherously captured by the sons of Yaroslav; freed by the Kyiv uprising of 15 September 1068, he ruled Kyiv for seven months. The Tale of Igor’s Campaign portrays him as a prince who prowled at night as a wolf.
