Battle of Mactan
Warriors led by the chieftain Lapulapu defeated a Spanish force on the island of Mactan; Ferdinand Magellan was killed in the battle.

Magellan, who had baptized Rajah Humabon of Cebu and concluded an alliance with him, tried to subdue neighboring Mactan by force. The landing party went ashore in shallow water and, left without the support of the ships’ guns, was defeated by the far more numerous islanders. In the Philippines Lapulapu is honored as the first national hero.
