Accession of Suleiman the Magnificent
After the death of Selim I, the Ottoman throne passed to his son Suleiman I, known in the West as the Magnificent and in the Ottoman Empire as Kanuni (the Lawgiver).

Selim died on 22 September 1520; on 30 September Suleiman, until then governor of Manisa, ascended the throne in Istanbul. His 46-year reign marked the height of the empire’s power: Belgrade fell as early as 1521, Rhodes in 1522, and in 1526 the Ottomans crushed the Hungarians at Mohács.
