Ninety-five Theses
Martin Luther, a professor at the University of Wittenberg, came out with his Ninety-five Theses against the sale of indulgences; this day is conventionally taken as the start of the Reformation.

On 31 October 1517 Luther sent the theses to Albert of Brandenburg, Archbishop of Mainz, under whose patronage the indulgences were being sold. The well-known story of Luther nailing the theses to the door of the Castle Church appeared only after his death, and historians dispute its reliability. The theses were quickly copied and reprinted — in Basel, Leipzig and Nuremberg.
