Charles’s main rival was King Francis I of France, and both sides spent lavishly on bribing the electors. Now united under Charles’s rule were the Austrian lands of the Habsburgs, the Burgundian inheritance in the Netherlands, and Spain with its overseas possessions; the rivalry with France continued in the Italian Wars. Charles himself was in Spain at the time of the election.
