Battle of Paris

The Allied armies stormed the approaches to Paris, after which the city capitulated; at noon on 31 March 1814 the coalition troops, led by Alexander I, made a ceremonial entry into the French capital.

The battle, in which about 63,000 of the roughly 100,000 Allied soldiers were Russians, was fought on 30 March at Pantin, Romainville, Belleville and Montmartre. To spare the city a bombardment, Marshal Marmont opened negotiations, and the capitulation was signed at 2 a.m.

Barclay de Tolly, who commanded the Russian troops, was promoted to field marshal. A few days later the French Senate declared Napoleon deposed.
