Founding of Majapahit
Raden Wijaya, who had used a Yuan army to defeat his enemy and then drove out the invaders themselves, was crowned under the name Kertarajasa Jayawardhana — and so the kingdom of Majapahit was born.

Wijaya, the son-in-law of Kertanegara, the last king of Singhasari, received after his father-in-law’s death a tract of forest at Tarik from the usurper Jayakatwang and founded there the settlement of Majapahit — named, according to tradition, after the bitter fruit of the maja tree. In the spring of 1293 he helped the Yuan army crush Jayakatwang, then suddenly attacked his allies and forced them to sail away.
Majapahit’s birth is dated to Wijaya’s coronation on the 15th day of the month of Kartika in the Saka year 1215, that is, 10 November 1293. In the 14th century, under Hayam Wuruk and his chief minister Gajah Mada, the kingdom’s rule or influence extended over most of the Indonesian archipelago.
