Formation of the Principality of Moscow
Moscow and its surroundings became the appanage of Alexander Nevsky’s youngest son, Daniel, the founder of the line of Moscow princes, under whose descendants the principality led the unification of Rus’.

By tradition, Daniel received the appanage under his father’s will in 1263, when the young prince was about two years old; until 1271 Moscow was governed by the stewards (tiuns) of his uncle, Grand Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavich. Daniel is first mentioned in the chronicles as an independent prince of Moscow under the year 1283. The formation of the principality is therefore dated to the range 1263–1283.
