Ismail I proclaimed shah in Tabriz
Ismail, the fourteen-year-old head of the Safavid Sufi order, led the Qizilbash to victory over the Aq Qoyunlu, occupied Tabriz and took the title of shah: the Safavid state was born.

One of the new shah’s first decisions was to proclaim Twelver Shi’ism the state religion, which shaped the religious character of Iran for centuries to come. According to some sources, Ismail assumed the title of shah in Tabriz in July 1501; according to others, at the end of that year, immediately after his victory at Sharur. The expansion of the Safavid state soon brought it into conflict with the Ottoman Empire.
