Battle of Chaldiran
The Ottoman army of Sultan Selim I routed the forces of Shah Ismail I; the Ottomans briefly occupied the Safavid capital, Tabriz, and annexed eastern Anatolia.

The battle was decided by cannon and by Janissaries armed with firearms and sheltered behind wagons: the Safavids had no artillery, and the charges of the Qizilbash cavalry broke against Ottoman fire. On 7 September Selim entered Tabriz but was unable to hold the city. The defeat shattered Ismail’s reputation for invincibility, and after Chaldiran the Safavids began to introduce firearms into their army.
