Thirteen ships left Lisbon on 9 March 1500. On 22 April the sailors sighted a mountain, which was named Monte Pascoal, and on 24 April Cabral went ashore and named the newly found land Vera Cruz. After sending a ship back to Lisbon with the news, the fleet resumed its voyage to India on 2 or 3 May; on the crossing to Africa a storm sank several ships, among them the vessel of Bartolomeu Dias.
