Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper
On a commission from Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, Leonardo da Vinci painted a scene of the Last Supper on the refectory wall of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Leonardo worked on it intermittently from about 1495 to 1498; the start of the work is known only approximately, because the convent’s archives from that time have been lost. Instead of true fresco he used a technique of his own — tempera on a special ground, which let him paint slowly and make changes, but the paint adhered poorly to the damp wall, and the mural soon began to deteriorate. The Last Supper became one of the emblems of the High Renaissance.
