Sudebnik of 1497
Ivan III approved the first law code for all the Russian lands, which established a uniform judicial procedure throughout the Muscovite state.

The Sudebnik replaced local charters with uniform rules of legal procedure and strengthened central authority. One of its articles allowed peasants to leave their landlord only once a year, around St. George’s Day in the autumn; it is regarded as one of the first steps toward serfdom.
